The weight is all in the front end of the plane, this helps to positively register the sole. Without the support in the front the plane handles more like a paring chisel. These planes make for a wonderful clean-up tool, excellent at removing dried glue or flush trimming plugs and joints. It is comfortable to use, similar to a block plane.
