The shafts are ground from a hexagonal bar with a hex nut left at the top of the shaft so you can get a spanner on there and shift those stubborn screws when needed. The shaft is continued through the handle for that extra strength. Beech stained wood and varnished handle and a black finish to the working part of the blade.
